Harmony New Beginnings Animal Rescue recently had the privilege of
helping a tiny lamb named Squirt become the recipient of a landmark procedure at Oregon State University. Squirt was born with bowed front legs, but at just 11 days old he was also found to be suffering from a very serious heart defect. A Benton County family had stepped up to adopt Squirt, and opted into a foster-to-adopt program with Harmony New Beginnings. That program makes it possible for Harmony New Beginnings to coordinate with the Erin and Mary Power Animal Care Fund in order to provide medical care for animals like Squirt with special medical issues. Squirt was taken to OSU’s Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital, where the vet staff and students determined that Squirt’s heart defect might be cured by a procedure which they had only ever performed on dogs. So Squirt became the first lamb to receive this procedure! The surgery was successful, and the OSU vets and students were then able to outfit Squirt with corrective shoes to fix his bowed legs. Squirt is now at his new home with his permanent adoptive family in Benton County. Thanks to the veterinary team at the OSU, and the assistance of HNBAR and the Erin and Mary Power Animal Care Fund, Squirt now has a good chance for a healthy life!
